Refrigerated trailer size calculator

Count what you need to keep cold. The calculator adds up the space it takes, allows room to move, and picks the smallest unit whose capacity a vendor actually publishes. Then it shows which vendors near you list a trailer at least that size.

What you need to keep cold

Cans about 2.7 in wide and 4.8 in tall, packed 6 by 4 in one layer: about 16 x 10.75 x 4.8 in, or 0.48 cu ft a case.

About 16.1 in across and 23.3 in tall, counted as the box it fills: 3.5 cu ft a keg.

12 x 20 x 4 in each: 0.56 cu ft a pan.

Measure a box in inches, multiply length x width x height and divide by 1,728 for cubic feet. A broken walk-in: use its inside dimensions.

Our assumption, not a vendor figure: you need room for shelves, a walkway and air to move around the cooling unit. Lower it if you will walk in and out all day.

  1. 1. Your items take up

    65.2 cu ft

  2. 2. Add room to walk and for air

If you can fill 60% of the inside, look for a unit with at least 109 cu ft inside.

  3. 3. Smallest unit with a published capacity that is big enough

    Small trailer, 4 x 10 ft

Your items alone would fill about 27% of its 240 cu ft inside; the rest is the walkway and air space. Capacity from the inside dimensions published by Chiller Trailer Rental: “Small Refrigerated Trailer 10 ft (L) x 4 ft (W) x 6 ft (H)”.

Companies are matched on floor size, because most publish a trailer's length and width and not its cubic feet. A match lists a trailer of 40 sq ft of floor or more. 5 companies list one:

How the calculator works

Each item has a volume: the box it fills, worked out from its dimensions and shown under the input. The total is divided by how full you can pack the unit to get the space to look for. The answer is the smallest unit in the table above with at least that much space.

Vendor matching uses the sizes each vendor lists on its own site. A vendor counts as listing a unit at least this size when one of its listed trailers is at least as large in floor area (width times length), or at least as long when it lists only a length. Sizes are as published; confirm the inside dimensions with the vendor before you book.

For what each size costs, see the refrigerated trailer price index. Vendors are listed only after we check them; read how we verify listings.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a refrigerated trailer inside?

Few vendors publish capacity. The ones in our data that do: 4 x 10 ft trailer, 240 cu ft (Chiller Trailer Rental, from its published inside dimensions); 7 x 12 ft trailer, 416 cu ft (Ice Cold Storage); 6 x 16 ft trailer, 565 cu ft (Just Chillin'). A 40 ft high-cube refrigerated container is listed at 2,366 cu ft by Mobile Box. Ask any vendor for the inside length, width and height of the unit they would send.

How full can I pack a refrigerated trailer?

Leave space for shelving, a walkway and air to circulate, especially around the cooling unit. The calculator starts at 60%, which is our assumption rather than a vendor rule; lower it if people will be walking in and out during the event.
